This Japanese glass fishing float traveled from a fishing village in Japan to Kailua by airplane about twenty years ago. When its old rope had deteriorated, I was commissioned to make a new macrame net for it.
The project gave me a chance to work around an object with a story of its own. I replaced the worn rope with a macrame design that framed the glass and allowed the float to be displayed again.
The finished piece found its place on my client’s lanai—a familiar object with a new handmade surround, and a connection between its journey from Japan and its home here in Hawaii.
